Destino on the Road
This ground breaking event in which the
professional and non-professional worlds of dance
collide in a fusion of inspiring personal stories
and heart-stopping performances took to the road
following its premier at Sadler’s Wells Theatre,
London. There were performances in Leeds
(3/4 April 2009), Cambridge and Manchester.
Several of the performers were from Bradford who have
worked with the Academy and progressed so much that
they are now working at this very high level.

Based on techniques used to educate and train contemporary dance artists, The Academy experience is a physically, mentally, and artistically challenging experience for young people who have failed to achieve in more conventional educational settings.
Whilst young people (always referred to as ‘dancers’) may see the main focus of The Academy as developing skills in contemporary dance practice, staff working in The Academy are also focussed on the dancers’ development in literacy, numeracy, and the social development skills built into each unit. This method, referred to as ‘literacy and numeracy by stealth’, reduces expectations of failure in young people. Because the young peoples’ main preoccupation is with an entirely new learning experience, and the development of literacy, numeracy and social skills is integrated into, and directly related to, the dance practice, resistance is minimised.
